The thermometer on the pickup’s mirror read 47 °C (117 °F) when we opened the doors at 11:42 a.m. I had six hours to film every inverter, combiner box, and panel edge on a 2,400-acre solar park before the asset-insurance team flew home that night. 2. Pre-Flight in a Mirage: Calibration Tricks That Matter

Hot tarmac tricks LiDAR altimeters and plays havoc with optical stabilization. I set the aircraft on the one patch of shade—the shadow of a water truck—long enough to run IMU and gimbal calibration. Two minutes, done. Then I pulled the props off again. Why? Wide lenses cover ground faster, but heat haze magnifies chromatic aberration. I chose 35 mm equivalent, trading 20 % swath width for a cleaner plate. That decision added eight minutes of flight time but cut post-processing warp correction by half. On a 47 °C day, you’ll trade almost anything for fewer mouse clicks inside the hotel room later.

5. RTK Fix Rate Under Fire

The closest network RTK caster dropped out twice—probably sunspot chatter or just Egyptian cell towers napping. The T70P’s internal PPK logged every epoch, so when we lost real-time corrections the aircraft kept writing raw carrier data. Back in the office I dropped the .obs file into Emlid Studio and re-applied base data from a CORS station 70 km away. Final horizontal RMSE: 0.7 cm. The insurer signed off without a single “please clarify” email; that alone paid for the extra batteries.

6. Lens Flare Is Not a Creative Choice on Solar Farms

Every panel is a mirror. Tilt even five degrees off nadir and you’ll invite a solar bloom that eats three rows of cells in the frame. I flew two passes:

  • NADIR at 80 m for the ortho.
  • 15° off-nadir at 60 m for the beauty shots, sun angle 30° behind the aircraft.

The T70P’s carbon landing gear is matte black, so it doesn’t bounce photons into the lens—small detail, big win. Still, I taped a three-inch strip of gaffer to the gear’s front edge, just in case. Zero flare in 1,847 frames.

7. Data Wrangling on Site: From Sand to SSD

By 3 p.m. we had 312 GB of DNG plus 43 minutes of ProRes. The T70P’s gimbal-mounted SSD cartridge ejects like a camera magazine; I swapped it without shutting down, slapped the full cartridge into a ruggedized reader, and started checksum-copy to two Samsung T7 shields. Copy finished before the next battery cycle—no downtime, no sunburned crew waiting.

8. The One Setting I Almost Forgot

Spray drones teach you to respect nozzle calibration; mapping drones teach you to respect trigger timing. I almost left the default shutter interval at 0.8 s, which would have overlapped 85 % at 14 m/s. Overlap that generous is overkill and balloons file count. I dialed back to 1.3 s, kept 80 % forward overlap, and shaved 22 % off the image set. Processing time in Pix4D dropped from 11 hours to 7—on a laptop that was already thermal-throttling in an air-conditioned hotel.

9. Thermal Sanity Check

The T70P’s core temp reported 62 °C at the end of the longest leg, still 13 °C under the redline. Meanwhile my handheld IR gun said the payload bay was 9 °C cooler—active airflow works. I did, however, keep batteries in a cooler with ice packs until the moment of use. Hot cells sag voltage; cold ones sweat condensation. The middle ground is 25 °C, and a cheap lunch cooler gets you there.

10. What the Asset Manager Actually Said

At 7:18 p.m. I handed over a 4 TB SSD with the orthomosaic, elevation model, and a one-minute cinematic reel. The manager scrubbed through the footage on a dim tablet, paused on a hairline cell fracture, and asked, “You’re sure this is one flight?” I showed him the single .log file timestamped from 12:04 to 15:27. He nodded, closed the tablet, and said, “Then we don’t need the helicopter next quarter.”

That sentence is why I keep flying the T70P.
